PolyCIVIS is a Euro - African collaboration that brings to the forefront the global polycrisis, allowing a better understanding of the impacts of several concurrent major societal crises challenging the world in the form of a polycrisis.

PolyCIVIS is a pioneering Euro-African initiative dedicated to understanding and addressing the polycrisis. PolyCIVIS, funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Networks, is led by the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and brings together 21 universities across Europe and Africa, including all CIVIS Alliance members, African strategic partners, and additional African institutions. This network facilitates cross-regional collaboration, dialogue, and joint action, leveraging the strengths of both continents to produce durable instruments and sustainable impact beyond the life of the project.

PolyCIVIS is designed to deliver practical, high-impact outcomes. These include joint teaching programs, policy Briefs, open-access educational materials, and a series of webinars, podcasts, events, and workshops. By fostering a shared understanding of the polycrisis, PolyCIVIS aims to strengthen Euro-African cooperation, support evidence-based policymaking, and cultivate resilient and knowledgeable communities capable of responding effectively to complex global challenges.

The project follows a framework across four key boundaries: it considers how different crises interact, combines scientific knowledge with lessons from the past, fosters collaboration across disciplines, and connects local, national, regional, and continental perspectives in Europe and Africa while overcoming language barriers.

These approaches are applied across three core dimensions: research, policy, and education. By mobilizing insights from these areas, PolyCIVIS enables evidence-based, policy-informed, and participatory teaching methods. The project’s educational dimension, in particular, emphasizes interactive and co-designed learning, where students actively participate in developing teaching assets and educational materials. This participatory approach ensures that learning is practical, engaging, and rooted in real-world contexts, equipping future leaders with the skills to navigate and mitigate complex crises.
